Horse racing is a respected sport in India with a legion of followers. This sport has always brought Indians together since the colonial era. The Indian 2000 Guineas ranks among the most popular races in the Indian history. For the past 75 years, this race has taken place every year without fail. And it is considered to be one of the 5 main horse classics. The race is named after a similar classic in the United Kingdom.

Like many other classics, Mumbai is the home of the Indian 2000 Guineas. Besides St Leger, Mumbai hosts all the other classics. This race has remained under the control of the Royal Western Turf Club since its inception. The Indian 2000 Guineas is one mile long, which is 1600 meters.

What is the Indian 2000 Guineas?

The Indian 2000 Guineas is a renowned horse race that takes place every year in Mumbai. This event brings out the finest horse racing Indian talent. It is also one of the five famed horse racing Classics. Given that India’s 2000 Guineas race was adopted from the British version, it also derives its name from the first-ever stake of the race.

Why is it called the 2000 Guineas?

When the organizers of the 2000 Guineas Classic race unveiled it in the United Kingdom, they set its stake at 2000 Guineas. One Guinea was equivalent to 1 sterling pound.

Difference between 1000 Guineas and 2000 Guineas

The 1000 Guineas and 2000 Guineas races are similar in terms of distance. Both of them are long mile races. However, only fillies are allowed to participate in the 1000 Guineas race. The 2000 Guineas race does not abide by similar rules, as both colts and fillies participate in this prestigious horse racing event.

History of the Indian 2000 Guineas

The history of horse racing Classics dates back to the 1800s. Nonetheless, Classic races were brought to India by the British colonialists many years later. And this is how the 2000 Guineas came about in India.

The British are credited for the introduction of horse race classics in India, 150 years later, after their first classics took place in their home soil.

The Royal Western Turf Club had its first classic race in 1943. And this is when classic horse races began in India. That year, three enthralling races took place in Mumbai. They included the 1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas, and the prestigious Indian Derby.

The first edition of the 2000 Guineas is said to have taken place in January 1943. By December 1949, the 2000 Guineas race was moved to December.

Over the years, the popularity of the 2000 Guineas has surpassed that of 1000 Guineas. The reason behind this is because fillies and colts compete in the 2000 Guineas, while only fillies contest in the 1000 Guineas.

The Princess Beautiful won the first 2000 Guineas race ever held in India. The filly’s trainer was MC Patel, while E Brit was the jockey who rode it. Surprisingly, Princess Beautiful won both the 1000 Guineas and 2000 Guineas that year.

At the time, the tournament’s stake stood at INR 20,250, but as of today, it has risen to a staggering INR 35,67,500.
